We had a snow with terrible cold on Thursday night. Friday morning the roads didn’t look that bad. Not a huge snow & the wind hadn’t caused drifting. I started into town behind the bus.
I decided to go on the state highway. I thought it would be clearer than the county road. The state highway was cleared. However, because it was so cold, the snow was dry & blew like thick dust in the truckers’ wake. I had to sit at the corner until the snow dust settled in order to safely turn onto the highway. I had to navigate the fog of snow all the way to town.
The same day my son was travelling with the school to compete at Area Band Auditions. They travelled later in the day. The temperature never climbed above freezing. He was in a vehicle with an experienced driver.
When I picked him up last night, I drove no more than 30 miles per hour for 7 miles. After I turned west the roads were fairly clear but icy. I asked Charles how the roads were for them. His answer, “Oh, they were pretty good.”
In Sunday school this morning, a friend inquired about the kids getting home. I quoted what Charles had told me. Bill was standing near. He chuckled. He had travelled the same road that Charles came home on yesterday too. He added that he wouldn’t say that. As a matter of fact, they weren’t clear. He went on to explain that parts of the road were really bad.
We just travelled home from church. The road was a little wet but almost all the ice has melted. It is now a balmy 44 degrees. The sun is shining. I could drive 60 miles per hour with no concern.
You see the road itself was the same. Different things influenced the degree of safety in travelling that same road: the vehicle on the road, my fellow travelers, the experience of the driver, the perspective of the person, the outside temperature, & definitely the timing.
I have been pondering the concept of truth. You see the only real truth comes from God. God does not change. The fancy word is immutable.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. ” James 1:17
Unlike me, this human misguided self, God is perfect. He has no reason to change. His innate characteristics are without flaw. Sure He can change His mind, but His motives are pure.
The truth that I experience in life is like the road conditions. What may be a good choice for someone else, may not be a good choice for me. Who is on the road with me will be different. My experiences are different. My perspective is different. My temperature will be different. (Am a calm or in a hurry? Am feeling distracted?) My timing will be different.
I do get off course. I do look at what others have done. I get fussy. I get rushed. I choose something that was good yesterday but not today. I want to be the driver from the passengers seat. I do all of this & more. However, if I keep my eyes on God, I can always find my way home.
Blessed travels friends!
